McClure Engineering began site design for the reconstruction in the fall of 2005, following a three year traffic study by MEC.

The preliminary study involved design alternates, and cost estimates to assist the City in seeking special funding in Washington D.C.

The City was successful in receiving special appropriations and in addition to Des Moines MPO Surface Transportation Program funds, were able to start the project in late 2005.

The NW 70th Avenue reconstruction project involved the removal of the existing NW 70th bridge overpass at Merle Hay Road and the creation of an at-grade, signalized intersection. In addition, the project included the widening of Merle Hay Road from Northglenn Drive to NW Beaver Drive and the widening of NW 70th Avenue from approximately 1,500 feet west of the Merle Hay Road intersection to NW Beaver Drive.

"This was a great project for the City of Johnston", said Mark Crawford, Project Manager.  "The cooperation between the contractors, City, MEC Engineering Staff, and the public made the construction process go very smoothly."
